Big Brother and Big Sister Club (BBBS)
Big Brothers and Big Sisters are high school students that visit with local elementary school students. Our students read them stories, eat lunch with them, and help them with their homework. They get out of one class about 4 times each semester for visits and carpool to the elementary schools. It's a lot of fun and rewarding too.
Information
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
We look forward to another year of Big Brother Big Sister here at MHS! In an effort to conserve paper, you can find the Parent Packet here on the website. All students and parents should read the Parent Packet and students must return the 5th page to Ms. Zalusky by September 23, 2009.

Our visitation date this year will be TUESDAY. The four days are October 6, October 20, November 10, and December 1. Spring dates will be set at a later time.

If you have any questions, call Kristen Zalusky at 828-652-7920.

Club Value
This club is truly unique to MHS. It is the only club whose focus is to allow students the opportunity to give back to the school system and community in which they grew up. The response is overwhelmingly positive as complimentary messages and cards get sent back from grateful parents and happy students.
Fast Facts
  • Members of the club impact approximately 100 elementary students each year!
  • Many students join as sophomores and remain members through their senior year.
  • Students taking Teacher Cadet classes often become members as an additional way for them to immerse themselves in education. Some students join BBBS and enjoy it so much that they become interested in teaching as a career. There is strong crossover as the two encourage a positive interest in education.
  • New members often join so that they can have the chance to return to the elementary school that they attended and in a way give something back.
  • Members have been visiting Old Fort and West Marion Elementary Schools from the beginning of the program.
  • The club has been in existence since before the millennium and generally has about 50 participants each school year.
  • Our current status is Growing!
  • Just in the past school year, we have expanded to include a third elementary school - Nebo Elementary! The response has been very positive.
  • We are currently planning to expand again and include Glenwood Elementary as our fourth school this current school year.
Membership Requirements
  • Members must pay $10.00 in dues each year.
  • Members must participate in club fundraising events during the year.
  • Members must be in good standing academically
  • Members cannot have any discipline referrals while at McDowell High School
How we use the money we collect:
The money collected during our fundraising events is used to benefit our local community. We use the money to purchase gifts for our Little Brothers and Sisters at the elementary schools and to benefit the needy as we respond to disasters such as fires and floods in our area.
